Fernando Iglesias
Licensing and Safety Manager
M.A.Sc., Ph.D.

Fernando Iglesias has worked in the Canadian Nuclear Industry since 1982 and joined Candesco in February 2007. Fernando has extensive technical expertise in fuel performance during normal and accident conditions, fission product release and transport, and safety analysis required for the licensing of power stations. He contributed to the CANDU Owner Group as researcher, technical leader and most recently as leader of the Fuel and Fuel Channel working group. Between 2003 and 2006, he worked on the standardization of safety analysis software as a member of the Industry Standard Tool Steering Committee.

His work has been recognized internationally where he has been distinguished twice with the “Literature Award” for best published paper, Material Science and Technology Division of the American Nuclear Society (1990 and 1997) and the “Dr. Teofilo Isnardi Award” (1972-1973) in Physics (Argentina), National Academy of Exact Sciences. His technical and scientific work over the past decades in nuclear fuel research has also produced 71 published scientific journal papers and conference proceedings. He also co-authored a report on “Scientific Issues in Fuel Behaviour”, Nuclear Energy Agency, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

He participated on the organization of international conferences as Chair of "Fuel Behavior and Fission Product Release Session, International Seminar on "Fission Product Transport Processes in Reactor Accidents", Dubrovnik, Croatia (former Yugoslavia), 1989; Conference Chair of the “28th International Utility Nuclear Fuel Performance”, Toronto, 1997 and Technical Chair of the 9th Canadian Nuclear Society International Conference on CANDU Fuel”, Bellville, Ontario, August 2005

Prior to joining Candesco, Fernando worked at Comisión Nacional the Energía Atómica (Argentina), AECL Chalk River Laboratories, Ontario Power Generation, Ontario Hydro, and Bruce Power where he held wide range of technical roles. At AECL, he was section manager of the Fission Product Release in Accident at Chalk River until 1989, and later section manager on the fuel, fuel channel and software qualification areas at OPG and Bruce Power.

Fernando has been the External Examiner for the defense of a M.A.Sc and a Ph.D. Thesis at Queen’s University and Ph.D. Thesis at the Royal Military College (RMC). He has support research studies in both Universities and also contributed in the organization of RMC neutron dispersion experiments in the High Pressure Preferred Orientation diffractometer at the Neutron Science Center, Los Alamos.

He graduated in 1967 with a M.A.Sc. in physics and in 1976 with a Ph.D. in nuclear physics, both from the University of Tucumán, Argentina. He is an active member of the Canadian Nuclear Society.
