Over 16 Years Experience
David Lau has over 16 years of experience in the nuclear industry in nuclear power reactor licensing and design, nuclear safety analysis, safety critical software development and quality assurance, and software categorization with respect to nuclear safety. David also has extensive business management experience and is currently Candesco's Chief Financial Officer.
David graduated from the University of Toronto in 1989, where he received a Bachelor of Applied Science (Honours) degree in Engineering Science, Nuclear and Thermal Power.
After graduation, David joined Idea Research where he participated in the development of formal methods for safety critical software production and testing in conjunction with the licensing process for the Darlington Shutdown Systems. In 1991, David became a partner and, in addition to the management of Idea Research, he continued providing services in various projects such as the development of the software tool CARUSR (Computer Assisted Review and Utilization of Safety Reports) used by Ontario Hydro to the verification and validation of the FACTAR code. David also participated in a number of Safety Report Updates for Ontario Hydro.
From 1994 to 1998, David led the Verifier Team in the implementation of modern software engineering techniques for the re-write of the Darlington Shutdown System Software during the Darlington Trip Computer Redesign.
Software and Process QA Expertise
David also co-authored the guideline for categorization of software in nuclear power plant safety, control, monitoring and testing systems to determine relative criticality of software components for Ontario Hydro. He participated in a variety of analyses including Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Reliability Qualification (RQ) Testing and Assessments.
Darlington Loss of Flow Project
David participated in the Darlington Loss of Flow Project aimed at returning the maximum output from 98% to 100% full power. David participated on the software development aspects, and the state-of-the-art Best Estimate and Uncertainty modeling and analysis that eventually resulted in the up-rating of Darlington back to 100% full power in 2002.
David is a founding partner of Candesco (1999) and since 2002 has provided oversight of all Business Processes and Infrastructure related to operation of Candesco. This includes human resources, staff development, training, payroll, benefits, legal, financial, operations management, accounting, bookkeeping, procurement and purchasing.
