Commissioning and Start-up Activities
Dan Duncan has 29 years of experience in nuclear and conventional industries. He has extensive experience in commissioning and start-up activities as well as operations and maintenance. Also Dan has particular expertise in computer control, plant control and instrumentation and control systems. With excellent management and technical integration skills, Dan has successfully held executive and senior management positions during the commissioning and start-up of nuclear and conventional facilities in Canada and abroad.
He began his career with the New Brunswick Power Commission at the Point Lepreau Generating Station. Here he gained his initial experience in startup, operation and maintenance of nuclear plant control systems and reactor shutdown systems during the construction, commissioning, and initial operation of the station. Dan's experience with computer control led to senior roles in the startup of a fluidized-bed coal-fired unit and the startup of a wood pulping mill. He assisted in the design, build, and startup of the training simulator for the Point Lepreau Generating Station.
International Experience
In 1992, Dan became Superintendent, Nuclear Instrumentation, at the Cernavoda CANDU in Romania, where he had responsibility for the startup of all nuclear plant controls and safety systems, as well as coordination of low power physics testing and of overall plant testing during the ascension to 100% full power. Upon returning to Canada, Dan took the position of Commissioning Manager for the MAPLE medical isotope reactors at AECL's Chalk River site.
Since 2000, Dan has contributed as a consultant to a variety of projects. He worked on safety report updates for the Ontario Power Generation stations and the specification, development and planning for the Gentilly-2 and the Point Lepreau Digital Control Computer (DCC) replacements. He also assisted in the development of the trades training program for the DaimlerChrysler Brampton Plant Magnum and 300C assembly line. Most recently, Dan has held senior roles in the licensing teams for AECL's Advanced CANDU Reactor and the Dedicated Isotope Facilities.
Dan holds a B.Sc.Eng. from the University of New Brunswick and is a Professional Engineer registered with PEO and APEGNB.
