Decommissioning

Candesco staff have managed and/or participated in decommissioning planning for a variety of nuclear facilities including power reactors, research reactors, heavy water plants, particle accelerators, isotope processing facilities and waste management facilities. They have prepared both preliminary and detailed decommissioning plans and decommissioning cost estimates that meet the requirements of CNSC Regulatory Guides G-219 and G-206. Most recently, Candesco staff performed the peer review on the updated Preliminary Decommissioning Plans for Ontario Power Generation’s major nuclear facilities.

Candesco staff managed the decommissioning of low-level radioactive waste managements facilities in Canada and overseas. This included preparing the work plan, waste removal plan and final release survey plan; designing the transportation packages; recruiting and training staff and local contractors; characterizing, packaging, loading and removing the waste; decontaminating the facility and performing the final release surveys. The decommissioning was documented in Decommissioning Reports that were submitted to, and accepted by the local regulatory authorities. Other experience has included decommissioning university and pharmaceutical research laboratories and developing the final survey plans for a former radioisotope processing facility.
